Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations came
into force in July 2007. The main purpose of these new regulations
is to require and ensure that all producers of electrical equipment
pay for the recyling of household electrical goods. Previously,
the bill for such recyling was met by the council where the goods
were disposed of.
For business purchasers of electrical and electronic equipment
bought from our company, Loop Scorpio Ltd passes all legal responsibility
on to those purchasers for the correct treatment and disposal at
the end of product life according to UK WEEE regulations.

The WEEE regulations also apply to retailers and distributors of
electrical equipment who are now under an obligation to actively
assist in the provision of a UK wide WEEE collection facility and
also to actively encourage the participation of consumers themselves
in the recyling of electrical equipment.
In order to assist you in the necessary recyling, we at Loop
Scorpio are contributing towards a national fund that will assist
local councils to further develop their existing waste electronics
collection facilities. This in turn will assist the producers of
electrical equipment to meet their own obligations.
Unfortunately, not every council site is suitable for the collection
of all types of waste electrical goods. Therefore, to find out to
see if your local site is suitable, and/or to locate your nearest
participating site (including other collection facilities that may
not be operated by the council), please visit Recycle-More.co.uk.
You will also on that site find lots of helpful advice on many other
aspects of recycling at home.
Did you know, for example, that :
- Electrical goods are the fastest growing waste stream in the UK, growing by 5% each year
- In the UK the amount of electrical waste we create in one year would fill the new Wembley 6 times!
- Each year in the UK we go through over 1.2 million tonnes of electrical waste. That is the equivalent of 150 thousand double decker buses!
- 75% of waste electronics end up in landfill sites
- In the lifetime of 1 UK citizen 3.3 tonnes of waste electronics is created! (weeeman.org)
- Two million TV sets are discarded every year - most end up in landfill sites (Recycle Now)
- "Over six million electrical items are thrown away every year in the UK. It is estimated that over half of them are still working or could easily be repaired." (ITDG, 2003)
- 15 million mobile phones are upgraded in the UK each year, laid from end-to-end they would reach from John O'Groats to Lands End! (www.sciencemuseum.org.uk)
Much of the waste electrical goods we all generate can be recycled
and resources recovered to make new consumer goods. To remind consumers
of the collection methods available which in turn allow recycling
to take place, all electrical items sold now carry the 'crossed
out wheeled bin' symbol. To ensure your waste electronics don't
contribute to damaging the environment, please visit Recycle-More.co.uk
and recycle today.
