MikroTik has been developing, installing and selling wireless routers
since 1995.
MikroTik's newest software product, MikroTik v2.8, is a software
router system which makes it easy for any VAR, ISP, or network admin
to make a PC router for wireless, wide area, or local area networks.
In fact, we ourselves have an increasing number of their devices
deployed within our own rural broadband networks and are very satisfied
with both their price and performance. The units are designed and
made by SIA Mikrotikls,
a Latvian company very well respected within the wisp community.
The MikroTik RouterOS software can be installed on any PC-based
platform, although we ourselves prefer to use it installed on MikroTik's
own designed hardware platform. The latest generation of this platform
is the Routerboard 500 series, and it is those devices (and associated
parts) that we intend to keep as stock items.
The basic RB532 board includes 3 built in Ethernet ports and two
mini-pci slots into which wireless cards can be inserted. An RB564
daughterboard is also available to extend the number of available
Ethernet ports to nine and the number of mini-pci slots to six.
Both indoor and outdoor housings are available, with the indoor
housing coming in two sizes (one to fit just an RB532 and one to
fit an RB532 coupled to an RB564).
The RouterOS software is extremely comprehensive in its capabilities,
as evidenced by the fact that a printed version of the manual runs
to over 500 pages! The pdf of version 2.8 is available here,
